Camp Lejeune Field House Gymnasium Renovation

What does it take to turn a single gymnasium into a space that serves an entire base?

At Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, the Goettge Memorial Field House needed exactly that: a full renovation that could support athletics, training, ceremonies, and base-wide events under one roof. A field house carries more weight than almost any other space a facility manages, and the same holds true across school gyms, rec centers, community spaces, universities, and athletic facilities, where one room often has to do the work of many. Scott Equipment & Surfacing partnered with Sauer Construction to deliver a comprehensive gymnasium renovation, coordinating every trade, product, and inspection required to hand over a facility ready for use.

DESIGN + PLANNING

The scope covered the full gymnasium: wall padding, hardwood athletic flooring, court layout and logo, retractable bleachers, spectator seating, and a new scoreboard system. Each component had to fit an existing space, so precision mattered from the first measurement. SES coordinated multiple trades and vendors, verified field conditions and dimensions, and sequenced the work so one installation would not compromise the next. Working alongside Sauer Construction, our team mapped how the court layout, equipment alignment, and seating would come together in a room with fixed walls and fixed dimensions. Getting the plan right up front kept the installation phase from turning into a series of corrections.

CONSTRUCTION + INSTALLATION

Renovating an active field house meant working within an existing structure while five major systems came together: flooring, bleachers, seating, wall padding, and the scoreboard. SES managed that complexity through phased installation, close coordination, and continuous quality inspections that caught issues while they were still easy to resolve.

The product list reflects the standard the facility demanded. We installed Aacer hardwood sports flooring, Interkal ESM telescoping bleacher seating, Interkal Aura slat back spectator seating, a Nevco model 2750 wireless multisport indoor scoreboard, Porter Athletic wall pads, and plastic lockers by PCIS. Every product met project specifications and manufacturer installation requirements, verified by our project managers throughout each phase. Before the base accepted the facility, we completed a final quality assurance inspection and functional testing to confirm every system performed as required. The project came in within budget, and the finished gymnasium met the quality and performance standards specified in the contract.

IMPACT + RESULTS

The completed field house gives Camp Lejeune a safe, modern, and versatile space that supports physical fitness, training, recreation, and community events. Equipment built for constant, heavy use means the facility can move from a basketball practice to a ceremony to a unit function without missing a beat, and without the wear that would force a bigger fix down the road.

Since completion, the facility has hosted all Marine Corps sports, unit functions, and base-wide activities, exactly the flexibility the renovation was designed to deliver. The space directly supports the base’s mission by promoting physical readiness, wellness, and morale while providing the community with a single room that accommodates athletics, ceremonies, and training alike. A renovation like this isn’t just about handing over a finished space. It’s about delivering something that keeps performing years after the ribbon cutting, through every practice, ceremony, and event that follows.
